Cinema has returned to a south Bucks town after almost 60 years.

The new Royalty Cinema will open in Bourne End this spring, with the first screening taking place on March 22.

The original Royalty Cinema closed in 1959 after 25 years, and was reportedly converted into a furniture store, with the car park sold off and shops built on the land.

Speaking about the new community project, Dave Foster, chairman of the Bourne End (Bucks) Community Association, said: “The idea came about a couple of years ago. It was last September that we said ‘let’s see if we can do it’.

“Community cinemas have become extremely popular in the last few years and we thought it was worth trying one in Bourne End.”

The new cinema project will debut with three screenings – Victoria & Abdul in March, Viceroy’s House in April and Dunkirk in May – at the May Woollerton Hall at Bourne End Community Centre, and will be run entirely by volunteers from the association.

The hall will hold around 150 people per screening, who will be seated at round tables for the showings, and the association has teamed up with the Wye Valley Volunteer group which provides a mini-bus service to its elderly members who do not have a means of transport, so they will be able to get to the cinema.
