Two readers have contacted us about the footballer Henrik Mikrut who we featured in last week’s Nostalgia page.

David Wiltshire wrote: “As you say he played in the semi-final match at Brentford with his Polish compatriot Krupa who is standing next to him in the picture.

“Mikrut was already injured, as was Malcolm Hunt, and really it was a risk playing them. No substitutes were allowed in those days and they were both limping badly all through the match.

“In the front on the right of the picture is Ken Butler whose son Eddie Butler is well known as a former Wales Rugby Player and now a commentator.

“Full back George Jackson is also in the picture.

“He was sent off in a match against Walthamstow Avenue which was very rare in those days. It prompted a mini pitch invasion which was dealt with very promptly by the legendary PC “Dodger” Green.”

David continued: “I went to the semi-final at Brentford with a crowd of other young people from Hazlemere. On the Friday might most of us were at the Church youth club in Hazlemere School where we met regularly.

“I spotted the large bell which was used to announce the start of school and the end of lessons, and decided to “borrow” it to take to the football to ring furiously when the Wanderers did anything good.

“Unfortunately there wasn’t too much opportunity during the match. The bell was returned on the Sunday night whilst attending the film show which the vicar gave in the school after the evening Church service. The bell may well be still in use, none the worse for its trip to the match.”

When asked to elaborate on the ‘legendary’ PC Green, David wrote: “Wycombe people of my generation all knew PC Green who looked after the town centre and gave short shift to anyone stepping out of line.
“He was very tall and he became a legend for the way he operated.

"I saw him give a thick ear to a young man who, late at night, was pushing part of a metal lamppost up the post and letting it crash down causing a great noise.

“That was the way anti-social acts were dealt with at that time.”

Ron Fidler wrote in to say that Mikrut also played for Slough Town, who at that time were in the Athenian League and played at the Dolphin Stadium which also featured greyhound racing.

Ron could not remember exactly when Mikrut played for Slough but it seems likely that this would have been before he played for Aylesbury Utd in the 1948/49 season.

This would mean that he was with Slough in his late teens.
