A nursing student at a south Bucks university has been raising hundreds of pounds to rebuild Syrian hospitals.

Third-year student Raghida Halaoui, supported by Bucks Students’ Union, organised two events at the Bucks New University’s High Wycombe and Uxbridge campuses this month to raise money for Hand in Hand for Syria.

The charity provides life-saving aid and works on establishing long-term projects to help rebuild the war-torn country.

Raghida, 27, was inspired to help raise money after attended a Syria fundraiser.

She said: “It’s close to my heart because when I was there I was really moved, so I made a pledge to do my best and try and raise some money.

“The charity doesn’t just give aid, but focuses on trying to help people rebuild their lives - like teaching people new skills and rebuilding hospitals.

“The fact that hospitals which are so needed, were not spared from the conflict is horrible so I’m just trying to help the charity rebuild them.

“We are so privileged here, so it’s good to remember how lucky we are and help those who need it.”

More than £250 has been raised so far. Raghida is also planning to hold a fundraising raffle and is looking for businesses who would like to donate prizes.

She added: “I have to say a big thank you to my wonderful friends in the university who supported and encouraged me.

“And also a massive thank you for the push from the Bucks Students’ Union as I couldn't have done it without any of them.”
