Plans to replace 35 children’s centres around Bucks with nine new hubs will go ahead – despite the original decision being called in by councillors.

The call-in was discussed at a meeting of Bucks County Council’s children’s social care and learning select committee for more than two hours this morning, where the committee debated the way the council consulted on the proposed changes.

Four backbench county councillors – Julia Wassell, Chaudhary Ditta, Martin Farrow and Niknam Hussain – triggered the call-in procedure to challenge the council's decision to press on with the proposed changes, which would see team bases at seven of the existing children’s centres along with the remaining two areas – Quarrendon and Buckingham – currently being assessed for “appropriate locations”.

Council bosses said the future of the remaining 28 buildings would be decided with local communities, schools and early years providers.

The call-in procedure is part of the council's democratic scrutiny process, enabling non-executive councillors to challenge any decision made by or on behalf of the council's executive and have it examined.

The select committee rejected the call-in request, which means the plans will go ahead.
