A former Royal British Legion secretary has pleaded guilty to swindling more than £62,000 of the club’s money over two years.

Ian Whitburn, of Peaty Court, Princes Gate, High Wycombe, wrote himself 139 cheques totalling £62,557 between May 2014 and October 2016 while he was secretary of the Flackwell Heath Royal British Legion club.

Court documents said he “dishonestly abused that position intending thereby to make a gain” while he was “expected to safeguard, or not to act against, the financial interests” of the club.

Whitburn pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position under the Fraud Act 2006 today (Tuesday) at Aylesbury Crown Court and has been bailed until his sentencing, which is expected to take place on March 16 at the same court.
