STUDENTS at the Gerrards Cross Summer School received the royal seal of approval last week.

The Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher paid the adult learners a visit at the Gerrards Cross Memorial Centre in East Common, Gerrards Cross.

The royal visitor was treated to lunch at the summer school before being shown around a few of the 58 classes. During the fortnight eager students, some who had travelled from as far as Glasgow, took part in a range of courses including bridge, taught by world famous player Sandra Landy, drawing for dunces', celtic design, philosophy, safety on the internet and many more.

A founding member of the Gerrards Cross summer school committee and one of the organisers of the annual event, Dr Audrey Hogarth, described how classes had changed since the school first ran in 1983.

She said: "In the first year we had 93 students. We thought that was fantastic but now it would be a poor year. We have filled up the whole centre and we can't make it any bigger because there aren't any more rooms."

The school, which is run by a team of volunteers, celebrated its 24th year this summer and plan to build on their success at next year's 25-year anniversary.

Places for the school become fully booked every year and this year was no exception. Some of the more popular classes were booked within two to three days after over a thousand booklets were sent out, according to organisers.

The Lord Lieutenant is the Queen's local representative.
