High Wycombe’s mayoralty will not come under threat despite Government support for plans to scrap all councils in Bucks, according to the town mayor.
Councillor Brian Pearce insisted the mayor’s office, which is run by the Charter Trustees, will remain intact even if the full transition to a single-unitary authority is made.
The mayor added High Wycombe would need a town council, saying: “It is ludicrous if we have a unitary council, that means people in Burnham or Iver or Gerrards Cross would have the right to say what is happening in High Wycombe. It doesn’t make sense.”

And Wycombe MP Steve Baker said the “cherished” age-old tradition “must be preserved”, however added any proposals for parish or town councils must “demonstrate how such a body will be representative and provide value-for-money services”.
He said: “The mayoralty is cherished by local people, and we must preserve this tradition going back many centuries.
“Any proposals for a parish or town council must demonstrate how such a body will be representative and provide value-for-money services.
“I anticipate any decision on the unparished area of High Wycombe would be taken by the new unitary authority if and when it is created but I will be writing to the Secretary of State with a recommendation.”
