Marlow Bridge will be closed overnight on three different dates next week in a bid to prevent HGVs abusing the weight limit while work is carried out on the A404.

Transport for Bucks (TfB) says it is taking "preventative measures" to make sure a repeat of the 2016 incident when a 37-tonne lorry damaged the bridge does not happen again while the A404 is carried out.

TfB said the risk of lorries abusing the three-tonne weight limit on the bridge while there are night closures om the A404 near Marlow and Bisham are "too great".

The A404 will be closed on alternate nights next week - March 19, 21 and 23 - for lining works.

The works require a full closure of the north and south bound carriageways from 10pm to 6am on each night.

A statement fromm TfB said: "While there will be separately signed diversions for cars and HGVs, the county council has decided that the risk of abuse of the weight limit of the bridge by HGVs attempting a shortcut is too great.

"It is not a decision taken lightly, and we regret any inconvenience caused to residents."

Diversion routes:

  •  A404 Southbound Closure – traffic will be diverted via Wycombe Road, A4155 to Henley-on-Thames and A4130 Henley Road. A secondary route will be in place from Marlow through Bisham and across the roundabout for those wishing to access the A308.
  • A404(M) Northbound and Southbound Closures – traffic will be diverted via the A308 and Bath Road
