Car racing and playing loud music in the district’s car parks could see drivers slapped with a £1,000 fine following complaints over antisocial behaviour in the area.

If approved, the new law could see motorists penalised for performing vehicle stunts, sounding their horns repeatedly and using “foul or abusive language” in the car parks.

Frustrated residents living in the Chiltern district have made “numerous” complaints to Thames Valley Police regarding excessive noise, including revving engines, near their homes.

Chiltern District Council (CDC) has launched a consultation on imposing a Public Space Protection Order in 20 of the district’s car parks to put a stop to the poor behaviour.

Cabinet member for communities at CDC, Liz Walsh, urged residents to take part in the consultation, and said her priority is ensuring the district is a “pleasant and safe environment”.

She said: “We have listened to residents who have made numerous complaints to Thames Valley Police about anti-social behaviour in car parks in the Chiltern area.

“In response, we have proposed a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to tackle the problem.

“A PSPO would prohibit certain activities such as revving the engine of a motor vehicle, racing with another vehicle, playing loud music, using foul or abusive language or loitering without a reasonable excuse in Chiltern car parks.

“The PSPO would not restrict or prohibit the legitimate use of a car park but provides the police and council with additional powers to manage anti-social behaviour in these areas.

“Our priority is ensuring a pleasant environment for residents and visitors to the area.”

Anyone who would like to comment on the proposals has until Friday, March 30 to submit their views via email to communitysafety@chiltern.gov.uk
