Wycombe Wanderers defender Joe Jacobson has hailed Notts County’s Jorge Grant as ‘the best player in the league’ ahead of Good Friday’s crucial match against the Magpies at Meadow Lane.

Just four points separate the two sides, with Wanderers currently occupying the final automatic promotion place, but Jacobson is wary of the threat posed by County’s leading scorer.

He said: “He’s a very good player and I think he’s got the recognition he deserves this season. He’s probably been the best player in the league so I’ve got to make sure I’m on top of my game.

“I’ve played against a lot of good players in my career so it will be another challenge for me to have a good performance against a player who is very highly thought of, so it’s something that I’m looking forward to.’’

A win would see the Chairboys move seven points clear of County with just six games remaining, but Jacobson insisted that the players won’t be getting carried away.

He added: ‘’We know there’s three or four teams below us that are all within touching distance, so until anything is finalised and mathematically impossible you’ve got to go into every game needing to win.

“We’re not preparing any differently for this game than any other game. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but the manager wouldn’t allow that to happen.

‘‘We’ll look to do the same thing we do every game, we’re an attacking team who like to get forward and score goals so the only thing on our mind will be going to win the game at Meadow Lane.’’

Jacobson is well used to the pressures of a promotion hunt, having been a member of the Bristol Rovers squad that went up to League One in 2007, and the former Welsh U21 captain hailed the mentality of the squad.

The 31-year-old said: “This season seems to be one of those years where everyone’s got a great feeling about it. Everybody’s desperate to get the promotion, desperate to win every game.

“We’ve got quite a few players that have had promotions in their careers so there’s a lot of experience in the squad. There’s a good mix of people here that have done it and those that haven’t, but everybody’s really hungry to make it happen which is a great thing for the club.’’

Jacobson has started every game for the Blues this season, carrying on his form which has seen him labelled by his manager Gareth Ainsworth as ”one of the best left-backs in League Two".

The Welshman added: “I am feeling good and feel I have been back to my best in the last couple of my games that we have played.

“I have a lot of chats with the gaffer over the course of the season and he has always told that he wants me to be his left-back and that gives me a lot of confidence in every game I go into and hopefully it can continue for the rest of the season.”

Jacobson will be looking to play his part at Meadow Lane, as Wanderers look to pull away from the chasing pack before a crunch encounter against struggling Grimsby Town at Adams Park on Easter Monday.
