The leader of the county council has slammed previous Governments for “under-investing” in the nation’s roads, and made a fresh call to scrap HS2 plans in order to fund pothole repairs.

Councillor Martin Tett took to social media calling for road repairs to be made a “national priority” as the cost is “way beyond local government”.

Last week it was announced that Bucks will receive £1.1 million from the Government to fix the county’s potholes – however Cllr Tett fears it will not be enough to fully repair the roads.

The cabinet member for Little Chalfont and Amersham Common also made fresh calls to throw out the high speed rail plans in order to raise funds to fix Buckinghamshire’s decaying roads.

Writing on Twitter, the Conservative leader said: “We have under-invested in our local roads under successive Governments. Cost to fix is way beyond local government.

“Fixing our roads should be a national priority with long term funding for resurfacing over the next decade. Can think of a giant project to cancel to fund HS2”.

Last month the cash-strapped council begged for Government help to repair potholes across the county after severe weather conditions added further damage to the roads.
