The district council looks set to plough ahead with a controversial car park scheme in Gerrards Cross and agreed to spend more than £90,000 on fresh plans.

Members of South Bucks District Council’s (SBDC) cabinet backed proposals to submit a fresh application for a new 443-space car park in Station Road at a meeting yesterday evening (April 17).

Original plans were thrown out last year after the council received numerous objections from furious campaigners – who compared the design of the multi-storey to a cheese grater.

However it looks as though the fight is not over yet for disgruntled Gerrards Cross residents, after the council announced it would spend £92,500 on submitting new plans with “slight changes”.

Plans for a car park in Station Road have been up for discussion for more than two years – after council parking studies found an extra 641 spaces would be needed in the town by 2053.

SBDC hopes to submit the fresh plans in either June or July this year – which are expected to include “minor changes” to the building to make it “more acceptable in planning terms” including fake balconies and colour changes to the cladding.

There are still a few hurdles yet to clear before plans are given the green light – with proposals set to be presented to the council’s task and finish group on April 23.

Chief executive of SBDC added that the recommendation to spend £92,500 on submitting the new plans will need to be approved by the full council.

Speaking at yesterday’s meeting chief executive, Bob Smith, said: “I’ve just been informed the budget for £92,500 to submit the planning application needs to be a recommendation to full council because that is outside the current budget framework.

“That would be a recommendation that you agree but it is referred on to full council”.

If plans are approved, construction is expected to start in 2019.
