Last week's warm spell allowed county council teams to start repairing deteriorating roads, after harsh winter weather contributed to sharp rise in potholes across Bucks.

Bucks County Council (BCC) chiefs spent the winter pleading with disgruntled residents to remain patient after icy roads and constant rain continued to damage the county’s fast-decaying roads.

Following the nation’s first real glimpse of spring last week, during which temperatures soared to as high as 26 degrees, BCC teams were finally able to start repairing roads across the county.

Speaking at a meeting of BCC’s cabinet this morning, transport chief Mark Shaw, said: “Just to say with the improvement in the weather last week it means our gangs have been out filling in potholes that have come up over the winter.

“We hope, with a bit more good weather to help us through, we hope that we will be cutting through the potholes literally and making a sizeable effort for residents to notice by the middle to end of May.”

Earlier this month leader of the council Martin Tett, warned residents they would have to wait until the weather improved before they saw a major improvement to the county’s roads – as damp conditions make it increasingly difficult to successfully fix potholes.

Speaking at this morning’s meeting, Cllr Tett urged residents to carry on reporting potholes to BCC as teams work tirelessly to carry out the repairs throughout spring.

Cllr Tett said: “If people have an issue with a pothole I would really encourage them to actually report them, report them online then we know where they are and we can go and fix them.

“So many people just assume that somebody else will report the pothole and wonder why it doesn’t get fixed.”

Last week the Free Press teamed up with campaigner Mark Morell, or Mr Pothole, who is urging Bucks residents to nominate the worst-affected roads in the county in a bid to force BCC to act over the growing crisis.
