Bucks New University is opening its doors to the public so they can learn what goes on in an operating theatre this month.

The Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) at the Queen Alexandra Road campus are throwing their simulation suite doors open for National ODP Day on May 14 so visitors can find out everything they ever wanted to know about the world of operating theatres.

The National ODP Day, run by The College of Operating Department Practitioners and UNISON, encourages practitioners to leave the theatre and speak to people about the profession.

The open event in High Wycombe will include drop-in sessions like what is operating department practice?, preparing for surgery and recovery from an operation, among others.

Shane Roadnight, a principal lecturer who has more than 20 years’ experience as an ODP, said: “Every day, in every operating theatre there are thousands of Operating Department Practitioners that are delivering high quality care to patients.

“But very few people understand the role or are even aware that it exists, yet all trust that they will receive the care that they deserve.

“By raising awareness with a national day, the patients will recognise that there are group of highly trained professionals who have undertaken specialist training to care for patients when they are at their most vulnerable.”

Like nursing, there is a shortage of ODPs within the NHS and the national day hopes to make people consider the career.

Shane added: “ODP is unique. It can be the difference between a good and bad experience for the patient. Surgery is a scary time for everyone and we understand that.

“Training to work specifically within this area ensures that every ODP is prepared for any eventuality.”

If you would like to attend the open day, which runs between 2pm and 4pm, go to the main reception, accessible via Lily’s Walk, and you will be collected by a member of the team.
