Marlow dignitaries marked VE Day in twin town Marly-le-Roi this week.

Mayor Jocelyn Towns joined former mayors Bob Johnson and Richard Scott for the celebrations with Marly-le-Roi Mayor Jean-Yves Perrot.

The party presented a wreath at the Charles de Gaulle commemoration at the old Town Hall, after which around forty guests took a coach ride to the old Marly cemetery in the forest where wreaths were laid.

Cllr Towns laid a wreath and assisted Patrick Gautier and Noreen Riols, an English lady living in Marly-le-Roi who trained the SOE (Special Operations Executive) during the last war.

She also gave a short speech in French followed by a speech by Mr Perrot.

Speaking about the event, Cllr Towns said: “It was a lovely occasion with fabulous weather and all very well organised.

“On return to town we met at the Salle de Fete for presentations to the children who had won awards for their study of the Second World War.

“Our twin town was looking splendid and we really enjoyed being there. We were so well looked after.”

VE Day – or Victory in Europe Day – took place on Tuesday, May 8, 1945, and was the day on which allied forces announced the surrender of Germany in Europe.
