Hot and humid weather will give way to thunderstorms and torrential rain this weekend, the Met Office is warning.

The weather service has issued a yellow alert for rain for much of the country - including Bucks, Oxfordshire, Slough and Reading - between 6am on Saturday and 11.59pm on Sunday.

Those who were planning a Bank Holiday weekend getaway may also think twice - as places like Southend, Isle of Wight, Brighton, Bournemouth, Cornwall and Somerset are also at risk of downpours.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop across parts of Southern England, the South and West Midlands and Wales on both Saturday and Sunday.

Thunderstorms will produce torrential rain and hail in places with up to 30mm falling in an hour, while some places may miss the worst of the heavy rain.

The Met Office says there is a "small chance" that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
