Opening their first restaurant in Aylesbury in 2014, The Works have followed up their success by opening another establishment in High Wycombe last year.

A quick wander through their website and a tantalising range of colourful treats greet the eye, packed with toppings and more ice cream flavours than you could shake a stick at. But The Works has more to offer than just fun desserts.

The aesthetic will perhaps not please the eye of the traditional diner, with an interior akin to a factory, but the decoration matches the industrial theme the company is going for and it is something a little bit different to other restaurants.

After being greeted with a warm welcome by the friendly staff and settling down at our table, I ordered an Old Mout cider, although I was heavily tempted by their tasty coke floats, which I have tried before when passing by for a sweet treat after shopping.

My partner ordered an elderflower fizz cocktail, which although I am not the biggest gin fan in the room, even I enjoyed, with its fruity and alcoholic kick.

I imagine that a lot of passers-by will enter just for a dessert, which is great shame as The Works’ selection of savoury foods is fantastic - and offers something the various other dessert places in town do not.

The traditional diner may again think it a little odd to eat a waffle or crepe with meat on top, but if you haven’t, I implore you to try.

I ordered a Dirty Dog crepe with hot dogs, pulled pork, pickles, Monterey jack cheese and barbecue sauce, whilst my partner had The Godfather waffle - with meatballs, Pomodoro sauce and mozzarella - which really was The Don.

The combination of meat, cheese and crepe in the Dirty Dog was delicious, whilst the sauce in The Godfather really was one of the best I have tasted for a long time, and even better with a waffle as its base.

Because we feel a duty to give a full picture of a restaurant (or because we are greedy - you decide), we followed that up with dessert, which as I have already mentioned, is wide ranging in its selection of waffles, crepes ice-cream and sundaes, and certainly there is something for the whole family.

My partner had a Hazelnut Heaven sundae, which towered full of Kinder Bueno ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate, which even the biggest chocolate lover will be hard pushed to finish.

I had a strawberry cheesecake waffle, which rounded off my meal nicely with mix of tasty berries and mascarpone.

So if you are looking for a sweet sundae to fill your weekend or want to try something a little different with a cheese-loaded waffle, head on down to The Works, where you might just find a little extra fun in your meal.
