Three Marlow youth groups are set to get a total of £6,000 towards their causes thanks to the town’s rotary clubs.

Marlow Air Training Corps, All Saints Crypt youth community and Marlow Sea Cadets will each receive £2,000 from a new community fund created by the rotary clubs and the Shanly Foundation, the charitable part of the Shanly Group which owns a number of shops around the town centre.

The fund was created to support the development of Marlow’s young people.

Marlow Air Training Corps was given a donation to support planned outward-bound activities, and to ensure the event becomes more inclusive and affordable for all of the registered charity’s 40 members. The donation will enable the corps to plan an event that will promote personal and team development.

Bob O’Sullivan, chairman of the corps, said: “The Rotary Club and Shanly Foundation continue to play an important part in our local community, specifically supporting many youth schemes and we are extremely grateful for their continued support.

“This award will help to enable more cadets to attend camp at a cost that is reasonable and within reach of all.”

The Crypt will spend its £2,000 to refurbish its facilities, in All Saints’ Church, allowing organisers to extend its appeal through outreach with schools in the area.

Chrissy Longley, from the All Saints Youth Team, said: “The young people of Marlow will soon have a cool, new place to hang out and unwind, and it’s all thanks to the amazing generosity of the Marlow Rotary Club and Shanly Foundation.

“We look forward to re-opening our new-look Crypt this autumn.”

The donation to the Marlow Sea Cadets will be used to help more of its members to take part in an upcoming group ocean-based sailing project, with organisers saying the experience will help those taking part to “understand the importance of care and respect for others” in a “highly disciplined” environment.

Bob Savidge, of the Marlow Sea Cadets, commented: “We are so grateful that our application has resulted in this award being given.

“An ocean event for a large group is expensive to organise, but those participating learn life time skills in ocean sailing, leadership and teamwork.”

Speaking about why the three groups were chosen, John Prout, President of Marlow Thames Rotary Club, said: “The three local Rotary clubs are very active in raising money, and to distribute £6,000 to local youth related initiatives with the help of the Shanly Foundation is a fantastic addition to our efforts.

“The three initiatives really will encourage young people to develop their contribution to the local community.”
