Although many of us had long suspected it, it was interesting to read in the letters page of The Times on June 8, a letter co-signed by our MP Cheryl Gillan confirming that she was a committed advocate for leave in the referendum and that she continues to believe that this is the way forward for the UK.

In the light of this, we presume that she will support the government this week, and will vote against every one of the House of Lords amendments.

Whilst everyone is entitled to their own opinion, where does this leave the majority of her constituents in Chesham and Amersham in relation to her representation of them and her consideration of their issues, views, arguments and concerns in respect of Brexit should they differ from her own?

In the Referendum the voters in the constituency demonstrated not only their wish to be engaged in the democratic process - we had the highest voter turnout in the UK, second only to Gibraltar, but also, significantly, their support for remaining part of the EU.

We know from experience that there is no point in trying to ask or persuade Cheryl Gillan to think again about supporting the amendments in their entirety, however there is one which we do urge her to consider and support, namely, Amendment 19a which will give the final say on Brexit (with an option of staying in the EU) to the British people.

This is of particular relevance and importance given the absence of any discernible plan either at the beginning of the process, or now two years later.

During this time, many factors and issues have come to light which were previously unknown or unclear.

Despite the current negotiations and iterations the final shape of the Brexit deal may not be that which voters once thought.

A People’s Vote gives both Brexiteers and Remainers an opportunity to make their views clearly known on the deal that being delivered in their name.

The Referendum result started the process; a people’s vote will close the deal.

If she is committed to the democratic process and believes that a good deal will be achieved by the government which the British people can support, there can be no good reason for her voting against Amendment 19a.

We look forward to Cheryl Gillan supporting Amendment 19a.
