An A&E nurse has been crowned the winner of a national poetry competition.

Debbie Lawson, who works as a senior nurse at Stoke Mandeville, got 49 per cent of the online vote for her poem called One for the Team.

Her poem was one of five shortlisted from more than 5,000 entries in the competition – A poem to remember – to mark the centenary of the end of WWI and will be read by Prince William at the new Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) at Stanford Hall near Loughborough on Thursday this week.

She said: “I feel very humbled but honoured to be able to tell the story.”

The poem is based on a true story from someone Debbie knew but contains a collection of stories that she has heard over time.

Debbie whose husband was in the RAF and whose son-in-law served in Afghanistan, has worked with traumatised veterans.
