After months of severe winter weather destroyed Buckinghamshire’s roads, blazing summer sun is now preventing the council from carrying out essential repairs.

Yesterday (June 27) Transport for Bucks (TfB) updated the Chilterns Local Area Forum on the county’s road repair scheme, after freezing temperatures added to the rising number of potholes.

However in recent weeks temperatures have soared to as high as 30 degrees, prompting residents across Bucks to hit the roads in pursuit of the summer sun.

The increased traffic in the county’s roads makes it more difficult to carry out the repairs, according to David Coupe from TfB.

He said council teams are working hard to fill  ‘dangerous’ category one potholes, however added “we are just not doing enough”.

He said: “Our first priorities are the category 1 defects, which could potentially injure a motorist.

“What it does mean the troops on the ground have been running around trying to rectify as many of those as we can.

“The problem for us is there are an awful lot of motorists out in the road suddenly, everyone wants to get out the road so they can get out, so we are restricted to what we can do.

“However we are keeping on top of it as best as we can. I went out this morning and looked at a good per centage of what we have achieved in the area, and I am very pleased with what I have seen. We are just not doing enough.”

Mr Coupe said the council is still receiving hundreds of reports of potholes per month, adding some roads are “damaged beyond repair”.

Last year TfB fixed a staggering 38,000 potholes, however this year it is expected to increase to 44,000.

In April councillors agreed to release £1.2 million from reserves and invest a total of £20 million into the county’s crumbling roads.
