A hospital theatre nurse from Longwick has completed a gruelling 2,000 mile cycle ride to Romania in aid of an autism charity.

Benjamin Marcu, who works at Wycombe Hospital, cycled from London to Botosani in Romania, where he is originally from – raising over £1,600 so far to support national charity, Ambitious about Autism.

During his 17 day journey across Europe, the 24-year-old cycled on average 100 miles a day culminating in a 240km ride over a mountain to reach his final destination.

He also had to overcome setbacks including a broken gear system.

He said: “Overall my journey went incredibly well, way better than I expected.

“I really thought that I was going to ‘hit the wall’ on day six or eight and indeed after a week on the bike you’re going through such a huge mental battle – but keeping your positive mental attitude at a high level is the only way to get over any situation.

“I was particularly challenged in Hungary where I broke my rear derailleur because of the mud.

“I had no spare, I was in the middle of nowhere, it was raining; it was the closest I’ve got to a break down.

“Incredibly a guy who spoke English stopped when I got to the main street and gave me a free lift to the nearest bike shop.

“Seeing my bike fixed gave me the sensation of being reborn. I shall be forever grateful to that man, Chapeau.”

Ambitious about Autism provides services, raises awareness and understanding and campaigns for change. It also runs specialist schools in London for children and young people with autism.

Ben found out about Ambitious about Autism through the charity’s connection with cycle brand Rapha, explaining that he was “very impressed” with the organisation’s mission.

Chief executive of Ambitious about Autism, Jolanta Lasota, added: “We’re hugely grateful to Ben for taking on this incredibly gruelling challenge in support of our work.

“Our ambition is to make the ordinary possible for children and young people with autism and it’s thanks to inspirational fundraisers like Ben that we’re able to continue reaching for this goal.

“His efforts have been phenomenal and I hope he is now enjoying a well-earned rest.”

Ben is now thinking about his next epic challenge – and is planning to sign up to Rapha and Ambitious about Autism’s 2018 Manchester to London event – a 220 mile cycle ride down the spine of the country taking place on September 2. Go to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/uk2ro to donate.
