Fixing street lights, improving drainage and restoration work on historic landmarks are all included on the county council’s list of major improvements for this year.

Bucks County Council (BCC) has earmarked £30 million for long-term improvements in 2018/19 – including road and footpath resurfacing as well as investment in bridges, safety schemes and parking.

A total of £1 million will be invested into structural work, such as bridges, with restoration work on the historic obelisk in Marlow set to take place later this year.

The council will also work to install new pipework and improve existing drainage systems in a bid to prevent flooding – with £1 million set aside to fund the work.

More than £2.5 million will be ploughed into replacing 500 street light columns across the county, while the council will continue its programme to replace old style lamps with modern LED units.

Over the last six years almost 15,000 conversions to LED lighting have been completed across the county, with more than 3,200 old style lamps expected to be replaced this year.

Hot weather disrupted some resurfacing schedules – however Transport for Bucks (TfB) is pushing forward with its pothole repair programme, with 10 to 15 roads being tackled each week.

Cabinet member for transport at BCC, Mark Shaw, said: “Buckinghamshire is in a uniquely challenging position; we’re a rural county yet very close to London which means our roads take some of the highest volumes of traffic nationally.

“That high volume of traffic, more and more of which is larger goods vehicles, puts a massive strain on our road surfaces.

"The council is committed to maintaining the roads to a safe and serviceable level, which is why we’ve put more money into road maintenance this year, and I’m proud of how hard the whole TfB team is working to make real long term improvements.”

A total of £879,000 from the Department for Transport will fund a number of road safety schemes on the A40 between West Wycombe and Stokenchurch.

More than £400,000 has been earmarked for the upgrade of traffic lights across the county, £250,000 will be invested into improving safety fencing, while more than £500,000 has been budgeted for locally organised projects such as traffic calming measures.

The weekly road resurfacing schedule is released every Friday and can be found on BCC’s website - https://www.buckscc.gov.uk/services/transport-and-roads/road-maintenance-and-repairs/road-treatment-programme/
