A new bakery in High Wycombe had to shut for two hours this morning after a rat came into the store.

Greggs bakery, on the corner of New Road and Squirrel Lane, was closed from around 9.30am until 11.30am on Monday morning after a shop worker had to chase a rodent out of the store.

The bakery, which opened on July 19, is the first store to occupy the site since the Co-Op supermarket closed down in late 2015 after shoppers reportedly saw rats running across food shelves.

A spokesman for Greggs said the shop was closed as a precautionary measure so a thorough search and clean could be carried out.

They said: β€œAt around 9.30am a rat came into the shop and was chased back out again by a member of staff. Greggs takes its food hygiene very seriously so the shop was closed while cleaning was carried out and it reopened at 11.30am.”

The spokesman said gas works are currently taking place outside the store and said the rat came from around that area.
