Marlow is gearing up for its inagural parkrun tomorrow (Saturday) thanks to a group of kind-hearted residents.

The inaugural Marlow Parkrun will take place at Higginson Park on Saturday, with dozens of runners expected to turn out.

Organiser Dianne Smith said the idea came to her after she and her husband moved to the Marlow and were surprised to find there was not one already in the town.

She said: “We move around quite a lot as a result of our jobs and there has been a parkrun wherever we go. Whenever we came to a new community it’s the first place we go.

“We were really surprised that there wasn’t a parkrun in Marlow. It’s taken over a year to get to this stage and we are really excited about it.”

Ms Smith said it took “months and months” of talks with Wycombe district and Marlow town councils to find a suitable route for the runners.

The group had to find money for equipment such as barcode scanners, signage and hi-viz jackets, with Ms Smith saying Parkrun did not want them to do crowdfunding and instead, approach local businesses for the funds.

Ms Smith said: “The people of Marlow have been absolutely fantastic.

“We managed to get financial backing and support from the community, and it all snowballed from there.

“We secured some money from Wycombe District Council from their grant scheme and a lot of businesses got in touch.

“We are ready now. This has been a long time coming.”

The 5km run will take place every Saturday at 9am. For more information, visit www.parkrun.org.uk/higginsonmarlow.
