TAXI drivers worried about proposals to deregulate Hackney Carriages at a council meeting demonstrated peacefully outside Wycombe District Council's offices this evening.

Twenty taxis parked outside the offices on Queen Victoria Road for around fifteen minutes in protest at plans that could see the number of taxis working in High Wycombe balloon.

Police officers maintained a low profile at the protest, but taxi drivers moved along again when other vehicles attempted to gain access to the council car park.

The Regulatory and Appeals Committee will consider the proposed change new policy at the meeting tonight, with taxi drivers planning to attend.

Joanne Mass, communications officer for Wycombe District Council, said: "The decision to deregulate was taken further to the Transport Act, which requires that local authorities cannot refuse Hackney Carriage vehicle licences unless it can be proved that there is no demand for them that is not currently met."

For more details on the protest, see tomorrow's Midweek.

I agree with Chris, more competition will reduce the rip off fares most of them charge..

I don't often use a taxi, but on the few occasions I have I've found their prices to be competitive with other transport methods (busses in particular) and the taxis will take you door to door unlike the busses. But I can't disagree with the "competition will do us good" arguement.

Yep, more competition is definately a good thing; I should imagine they'll be a good few scraps at the taxi ranks though.

The amount that taxis are allowed to charge are regulated by Wycombe District Council, so don't expect taxi fares to go down as a result of more licences being granted.

I live 2 miles from the town centre and a bus fare is about £2.00 and a taxi fare is about £5.00 - it's almost a no brainer with the taxi door to door.

2 miles is but a brisk walk! No wonder there's an obesity problem...

as i seen last week taxi drivers protest and find out why they are on protest. as i read bucks free press i find out why they were there. more comptition will help to improve taxi services. there is always shortage of taxi in peak hours like morning and school times in afternoon. council official can see wider view of their services. they will not be bullied by some people who want their manoply rather than free comptition.most of taxi driver fully supporting council degrating. so well done wycombe council for being fair to every body.
