RESIDENTS gathered together for a meeting today to protest against the building of an eight storey tower block in High Wycombe.

Bucks New University has submitted plans for a new accommodation block which, if passed, will house 936 students on the old Compair site in Hughenden Avenue.

Tony Williams, who lives in Ripley Close, a road which he says will be affected by the development, was present at the gathering today in Gandon Vale.

He said: "There's nothing higher than four floors here at the moment. It's completely out of character with this area.

"The effects on road congestion will be terrible. Hughenden Road is packed as it is in the morning and in the evening.

"It's certainly going to devalue our property."

The plans are scheduled to go before Wycombe District Council's Development Control Committee on February 27.

Mr Williams said he intends to organise a petition to oppose the plans.

What SHADY dealings are going in at our local council's corridors of power?
Why has the Sports Centre proposal been dropped WITHOUT a vote?
Will Hughenden Road residents still be forced to give up parts of their gardens?
Will there be compensation for loss of privacy?
Bucks CC and Wycombe DC give the impression of being rotten to the core.
Who will end up with the biggest bank account?

But George - there has been a vote - at the WDC Conservative Group meeting months ago!

No need to take it to full council!

That attitude comes with the arrogance of power.

Sell Cressex Island for a Porsche dealership - Tory Group Vote? Yes.

Use the money to prop up the redevelopment of Handycross as a Sports Centre? Tory group vote? Yes.

Let BCUC build a high rise student accommodation block completely out of character? Tory Group vote? Yes.

That's the development of the town done and dusted for another 4 years!

No need for council to get in the way.

Over half of the Tory councillors are from rural areas so they don't have to put up with what happens in the town anyway.

ithink there should be an investigation oas to any relationships between the developers and the planners. There are alot of rather shadey deals going on in the area, usually between estate agents and their developer mates, but someone has to look at schemes such as this as well.

The public should NOT be left out of the loop, just to make a few people shedloads of money.

Not bothered about this story .... but would like to have made comment on the gathering outside the police station. Anyone able to tell me why I can't? I have views on the situation and in a free country would like to express them? Why am I censored? How about it BFP?
Anyone out there with me on this or is it just me??

because at a guess (and it is just a guess), someone has written something on there that is "near to the mark". Same with the "horse farm" article, where the guy has pleaded not guilty! There is one comment on there, and now no more can be added! Will let you work out what the reader probably wrote!

In regard to the 8 storey block. What exactly is the problem with it? New building, more money spent in the town. It would not increase congestion on Hughenden Road as students are not allowed to bring cars with them when they are staying in halls!
