A PARADE celebrating the birth of Islamic prophet Muhammad is set to take place in High Wycombe on Sunday.

The Wycombe Islamic Mission is organising the procession which will begin at Jubilee Road Mosque and continue on to High Street, Wycombe General Hospital and back to Jubilee Road.

The 20th annual Milaad' celebration in High Wycombe will start at 11.30.

The procession will stop in the High Street for messages and a prayer to the people who are ill in Wycombe General Hospital.

I think the prayer outside Wycombe General Hospital is a smashing gesture

It's the thought that counts...The Muslims in this parade mean well. No doubt a lot of people are going to have negative things to say, but I feel this does not harm anyone so should be encouraged.....I hope it goes well for them.....

After 20 years this has got to be considered as much a part of the traditions of the town as weighing the mayor. Our neighbours are celebrating their faith and I for one wish them well...

...and I'm a white atheist!

I agree with m. It's events like these that show that not all muslims are crazed explosive wielding maniacs and that the vast majority are indeed caring and loving

I have no problem with this parade. As long as they don't try and use it to convert the patients at the hospital to Islam.

and a prayer to the people who are ill in Wycombe General Hospital.

As far as I'm aware the only properly designed, controlled, study of the efficacy of prayer on medical outcomes showed that the patients who were prayed for had slightly worse outcomes - but only if they knew they were being prayed for. It had no effect on a control group who didnt know they were the target of prayers. You can read about it in one of Richard Dawkins books.

Mind you, if I recall correctly they were christian prayers. Maybe muslim prayers work better.

Might be best though, to be on the safe side, to hide all copies of the BFP in Wycombe General, so the patients dont know about it.

You could hardly read a Richard Dawkins book and expect anything other than an anti-religious, anto-faith conclusion. Conversely, an article on BBC News website (http://news.bbc.co.
uk/1/hi/uk/1844076.s
tm) states...
But, remarkably, many modern tests have reached similar conclusions. Professor Leslie Francis of the University of Bangor has studied 31 experiments (conducted to the "highest professional standards") into the effectiveness of prayer.

The trials would typically take a group of hundreds of patients recovering from heart surgery, randomly divided into two groups, one of which is prayed for. None of the patients would know they were or weren't being prayed for.

"The findings are quite staggering," he says. "Studies show that patients in hospital who are being prayed for (even when they do not know they are being prayed for) are more likely to recover."

Fortunately, we have freewill to accept or reject faith/religion as we wish. But be careful which you choose!

will they allow us a st.george day parade and march

I can't really comment objectively because the bbc report does not give away much about how the studies were constructed. I can only observe that Leslie Francis is a theologian not a scientist.

Dawkins may be the spawn of satan but he does tend to emphasise evidence as the basis for the views he presents.

Anyway, to push the point even further, if you do belie that praying for someone will actually affect their life in some way, surely it is only polite to ask them first and obtain their consent.

As a Muslim who will be attending the Parade I would like to thank everyone for their warm acceptance of this event.

I expect so, organise one.

However there is one for Easter, if you want to join that.

The act of "joining up with others to achieve inner peace and strive for peace and the greater good of mankind" does exist. Some call it religion others may have different names for it.

Some require unswerving belief in an unprovable concept, whilst others can manage the same thing without it.

I quite like the old parade actually, lots of noise and bright colours, its all good fun.

Glad to see that the Muslim community will also be welcoming all to come and have a look and see what its all about.

And i think Elmo is right, if you want a St. Georges day parade, then get on and organise one, i am sure a lot of people will turn up, and a great deal of them will be from religions other than Christianity.
