THE three richest towns in the UK are all in south Bucks, according to a survey by a national newspaper.

Beaconsfield was named the richest town in the country by the Daily Telegraph - and it was closely followed by Gerrards Cross and Chalfont St Peter in second place and Amersham in third.

Marlow just missed out on a place in the top ten, being named the eleventh richest town in Britain.

The Daily Telegraph today described Beaconsfield as "nestling in the Chilterns like an expensive jewel", adding that houses in Westfield Road and Cambridge Road "routinely" sold for more than £2 million.

The average price of a house in Beaconsfield, £684,474, is reportedly 14 times the average annual income - with prices in the town rising by 60 per cent in the last five years.

More than half of houses sold in Beaconsfield go for more than half a million pounds.

City highfliers and well-performing grammar schools in the area were some of the reasons for the high house prices, said the Telegraph.

Gerrards Cross was described as a "pearl" and Amersham being called a "lovely historic old town".

High prices there were attributed to being close to countryside and London at the same time.

Nearby Henley was 13th on the list, and Windsor was 28th.
