A WAITROSE store could open in Gerrards Cross - a few months earlier than the town's ill-fated new Tesco.

Property group Frontier Estates has announced plans for a new apartments and food store development at a site in Station Road currently occupied by a car dealership.

The proposals could see a 13,500 sq ft Waitrose store - approximately half the size of the Beaconsfield branch - move in alongside 15 one-bedroom apartments and 20 two-bedroom apartments.

The developer says it will submit a formal planning application this summer which, if successful, would see the store likely to open for business in mid 2010.

Tesco bosses announced this month that the expected completion date of its ill-fated store under construction in Packhorse Road had been pushed back to October 2010.

A steel skeleton of that store is currently being demolished to allow developers to rebuild the railway tunnel which collapsed in 2005.

Nigel Keen, Waitrose director of development, said: "We believe a Waitrose food shop would add to the vibrancy of the village and provide the local community with a wider choice of high quality fresh food and groceries.

"Following extensive research, we are confident that our business philosophy and product range would be a good 'match' for Gerrards Cross and enhance local trading for the benefit of other retailers."

A public exhibition of Frontier Estates' plans will be held at the Bull Hotel in Oxford Road on May 9 and 10.

Tony Williamson, director of Frontier Estates, said: "Gerrards Cross is already a very well-established, vibrant village and we are determined to submit a scheme that best meets the needs of the community.

"The objective of the exhibition is to help us to actively seek out the comments and views of local residents, businesses and community leaders so that these can be fully considered before we finalise our application."

After the total shambles and major disruption caused by Tesco in Gerrards Cross, there's no prizes for guessing where the residents will shop!

It would just prove what we've known all along - it's all down to snobbery. The objections to a supermarket were nothing to do with the effect on the other traders in town, it was just the fact that it was a Tescos and "we wouldn't want a shop where the poor go".

To be honest, while i'm sure there is snobbery from some people, I think the fact the Waitrose is a relativly small store compared to the Tesco's Superstore may be why it's more welcome.

Why have one in Gerrards Cross when there is a perfectly good one in Beaconsfield?

South Bucks doesn't need all these grocery retailers. It is time affirmative action was taken.

It is as if many people have just not been to see the most modern & excellent stores built by most of the supermarket chains which are all very good, especially those with hard goods departments, if you still buy 'really' and not 'virtually', that is.

Almost as if some people still want to live in a 1930s British-made movie world.

Unreal.

Roll on modern times!

yes
I am a supermarket snob and proud to be so
Tescos are revolting - I don't like their food - I don't trust their food and am a firm beliver of the adage - you get what you pay for.

I would welcome Waitrose if only to spite Tesco, who embody all the worst aspects of "Big Business".They have ruined the centre of GX by simply ignoring overwhelming opposition to their plans. It can only get worse when the store is operational. Waitrose is a true partnership and every worker shares financially in its success. It deals fairly with its suppliers and customers and I trust their hygiene standards and sell-by dates. In all honesty, GX probably didn't need either but I know where I'll be shopping.

here! here!
And carry on with your fight - Tescos has no place in decent society and anyone who shops there should be deeply deeply ashamed. Even the advert makes me shudder!
