Underwear charity set for launch

A FLEDGLING charity is set to be launched Saturday evening which hopes to provide Africa with the clothing essentials.

Nine thousand pairs of underwear have been donated to Knickers4Africa, which carries the tag line: "Underwear is a necessity. No one deserves the humiliation of having to buy someone else's used pants."

It has been set up by project manager Emma Donovan, from the Rotary Club of High Wycombe, who came up with the idea after she travelled to Sierra Leone.

She said: "We have got a good number coming and it's looking like it's going to be a great evening.

"There are models who have kindly offered to help out for free including some friends who thought it would be a bit of a giggle.

"We are also encouraging everyone who is coming to bring a pack of pants. They'll be entered into a draw and someone will win a bottle of champagne."

One of the highlights of the event is a one woman comedy show about the history of knickers. Miss Donovan said: "She's the star of the evening really."

There will be live African music, an African drumming teacher demonstrating the Djembe and other entertainment such as a liquid chocolate fountain, fashion show and drinks party.

Miss Donovan will be setting out aims for the future and showing photos from her travels in Africa.

She said: "Underwear is something we take for granted but in Africa if you want to buy a pair of pants it costs two week's wages and it always used.

"It's captured a lot of people's imagination and we've been getting support from every where. People who have been searching charities have been finding us on google."

The launch will take place on Saturday night from 7pm at Hawkins Farm, Frieth road, Marlow.
