A CAMERA club has begun a drive to recruit new members.

Snappers from Marlow Camera Club have been travelling the world since it formed in 1966, capturing images of famous locations, exotic animals and breathtaking scenery.

The club, which has 50 members, is hoping to attract fresh interest from aspiring David Baileys and Brassaïs in the town.

Club secretary Nick Taylor, a travel photographer, said: "I think interest in photography has blossomed with digital coming into the mainstream. There's a lot of people with digital cameras who are looking for the next step up, moving beyond the point and snap."

The club meets on Tuesday evenings between September and March at 7.45pm at Methodist Church Hall, Spittal Street, Marlow, and has informal gatherings during the summer. It holds regular workshops and presentations from guest speakers, such as Joe Bangay, who has taken snaps of Prince Charles and Princess Margaret.

Every year the club works on a project with Metroland poets to combine images with poetry.

Member Shirley Arnold names India, Nepal, Australia and China among the locations for her own photography.

Her work also includes scenes closer to home such as a snow covered tulip growing in the angle of a lime tree branch.

She said: "When I was at school I was given a camera and I used to develop black and white photos under the stairs. It's just grown since then. There's something satisfying about it, in the same way painters get from their painting and musicians from their music."

The club is hoping to attract new members in time for its Welcome Back meeting on September 9 and there will be a Back to Basics workshop on September 16.

Mr Taylor said: "We pride ourselves on being a very friendly club and make sure newcomers are welcome."
