A RECRUITMENT drive for more special constables in Thames Valley has been launched.

An advertising campaign will see posters put up in health clubs, bars and restaurants in Bucks.

It is part of a wider campaign also targeting Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

The campaign aims to help the force hit its target of having 300 specials by the end of next March, compared with the current 240.

Special constables must be aged 18 or above, a citizen of the UK, EU or Commonwealth countries and have no criminal record.

Specials do a great job for, as I understand it, no pay.

Good for them.

But surely this story is really about cuts in policing, disguised as improvemetns - as with PCOS. More people, but fewer "proper" police.

Hey BFP, how about posting a copy of this poster, or at least a link to it?

Do "special constables" get to sit on Marlow hill "monitoring traffic"?

I wouldn't mind doing it as a weekend job, but no way will I put my life on the line for no pay when real policmen get a good renumeration package. Part-time/ retained firefighters work well, why not part-time (paid) Police officers? it would be a cheap way of policing the area evenings and weekends.

Hey Lo , that would be a real value adding activity , you can never have enough officers monitoring traffic and bringing in revenue. We should have more on Marlow Hill , London Road , Hicks Farm Rise . Never mind assaults , muggings and burglaries in the area

Now don't be silly, of course they can't.

Thats what the real police do, sneak around in vans and on overtime rates too!
