Travellers leave mess despite reassurances

RUBBISH has been dumped in a field occupied illegally by travellers - despite their reassurances it would be cleaned up.

Half-a-dozen caravans were parked on the land near the junction of Hughenden Valley Road and Cryers Hill Lane in Hughenden last Thursday.

Residents were anxious for the travellers to leave after another group left rubbish, including human faeces, in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beatuty in May.

The visitors have now packed-up and gone but left mounds of rubbish.

A TV, settee and fridge were among the items left behind.

Just this week one of the travellers said: “We don’t leave mess, we only bring back firewood. We black bag rubbish and leave it by the gate for the council to pick up.

“I came from Glasgow yesterday and there were no sites along the way at all. Other parts of the country drop off a skip and portable loos as some caravans don’t have toilets so they use the hedge.

“Down here they don’t seem to do it. For three years we have been trying to get on to a site. I’ve tried from the bottom of the country to Scotland. I’ve got my name on 30 waiting lists. One particular site has a 15-year-waiting list.”

The land is made up of strips owned by around 60 landowners.

and the fact that they left rubbish is a big surprise, isn't that what they do?

No doubt the local rag and bone man will be round like a shot to collect the fridge!

how can you care about the travellers when they have so little respect for other people and the land

I would'nt trust travellers as far as I could throw them....that's as much as I'm saying

Of course the council will be looking to prosecute them for illegal dumping, or is it yet again a case of one rule for us and one rule for them?

Nothing will happen, always go for the easy targets

If they are camping illeagaly then we shouldn't provide them with waste facilities beacuse we're advocating them breaking the law. That "Traveller" has lied.
A few years ago there was a story of a farmer who had these "travellers" break into one of his fields. He got onto the police about it and they said they couldn't do anything. A few weeks later the police are knocking on the door saying he has an illegal campsite on his land.

Travellers leaving a mess behind them. Wow, what a shocker. These people should be traced and fined heavily, just like anyone else would be.

You would have thought we have enough police to deal with these people but, then again they are obviously too busy harrassing innocent motorists.

I wonder if all the coppers are happy that the job they signed up to do...

Catching criminals
Making society safer
Looking after the vulnerable

...has instead, turned into sneaking around in speed vans, and leaving the poor powerless PCSOs to walk the beat.
