AS a new batch of youngsters embarked on their first term at secondary school, they were welcomed by a former pupil turned teacher.
PE teacher Adam Stubbs, 31, an old boy at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, has taken over as head of Year 7.
Mr Stubbs, a teacher at the school for seven years, said he understood how nervous the new recruits must feel on their first day.
He said: “I started almost 20 years ago here myself which is quite scary. I probably felt quite similar to the guys here – excited, nervous and thinking what a big school it is.
“It’s a very exciting role. I’m going to see the boys in a different light, as opposed to just from a sporting perspective. I’ll be responsible for their learning and welfare across all the subjects they study.”
There are 192 Year 7 pupils at the school, divided into six form classes.
Mr Stubbs added: “When I first came back as a teacher, it was very odd to walk into the staff room. There were teachers here who taught me. It’s a fantastic school to have to work at though.”
It was also a landmark day for Andrew MacTavish, chairman of the academic committee, who started as a pupil at the school 60 years ago.
Mr MacTavish, who taught English and Latin at RGS and was also headteacher at John Hampden Grammar, said: “I’m a little bit emotional, realising it was 60 years ago today that I first walked into the school. There have been a lot of changes from when I started – we were really rather thrown in at the deep end – but it’s a lot better today.”
Tom Louch, 11, of Ball Lane, Gerrards Cross, said: “I’m nervous and excited but looking forward to the activities trips and new subjects.”
