THE leader of Wycombe District Council pledged today to save the town's Remembrance Day parade.

Cllr Lesley Clarke said she “won’t allow” the parade to be cancelled over a £1,900 council bill for crowd control barriers.

The Bucks Free Press today revealed that organisers fear spiralling costs (see link, right) will eventually see the parade close.

This week, Second World War veteran Monty Seymour, a great-grandfather of seven, called on the council to step in and stump up the cash.

And today Cllr Clarke said: “You can take it from me, I’m working at this moment with the county council in trying to put something together so it happens.

“We won’t allow this problem we’ve got at the moment to stop it.

“It won’t stop there - we’ll definitely put something into place so it’ll be there forever.”

She added it was a proud tradition that should be allowed to continue.

Cllr Clarke said: “I think it’s exceptionally important and a special part of the British culture.

“We are very quick to deride our traditions in this country, but Remembrance Sunday is something that should remain.”

She added: “You or I wouldn’t be here if people hadn’t laid down their lives for us.”

An announcement on plans for the parade is due at the start of next week.

Cllr Clarke should tell the County Council she does not want to "buy" the barriers - just "rent" them for half a day.

£1,900 rent for barriers for half a day! I am in the wrong business!

£1,900 for a few barriers! That’s outrageous.

It’s very sad to think that even the Remembrance Day parade for those who made the ultimate sacrifice is being put under threat because of this.

What has this town come to?

This parade is not under threat. This is just another public spat between the two conservative councils. The sooner we have a unitary authority the better.

The tories should do their bickering in private. Even the Tories wouldn't dare to cancel the parade. This is just an argument over which Tory Council foots the bill.
Even funnier is the fact that Lesley Clarke sits on both Councils! Perhaps she will write a letter of complaint to herself.

Whilst a Police Officer in High Wycombe for 19 years I worked on at least 2 Parades each Remembrance Sunday every year and at none of them were barriers used or even needed. There was never any problems or any accidents, the crowds quiet and respectful. This seems another case of the nanny state 'protecting' the public from a perceived unknown danger and the undermining of British traditions that we are sadley losing due to Political Correctness.
Lesley Smith has always fought for the people of High Wycombe and I hope she will continue to do so for many years to come.

That's what we like about our police - attention to detail.

In a week when High Wycombe's most courageous wartime military son, Ian Fraser VC, passed away, we are having to contend with all this waffle about the Rememberance Day Parade not taking place. I suppose if the health & safety people had been around when he dived below an enemy ship to blow it up, they would have found a reason for him not to go.
If the County Council have contracted a company to supply the apparently necessary barriers, and they don't have the barriers in stock.....tough! Or do they have an open ended contract which allows them to charge what they like?
Finally if the National Dailies get wind of this story, when our young servicemen and women are being killed almost daily in today's two theatres of war, then I fear this will reflect very badly on this county.
