FILM enthusiasts are in for a treat as a new society is launched.

Beaconsfield Film Society is set to hold the premiere of its first two screenings tonight and Saturday.

The club was started by film lovers in the town who were keen to put on monthly showings at a new theatre at the National Film and Television School in Station Road.

Strictly Ballroom is the first showing at the two sold-out performances this weekend.

A founder, Tricia Barker, of Windsor End, said: “The steering group only met for the first time three months ago. We have already had 600 enquiries and 189 members before we have even started. We have got 23 people who have expressed an interest in helping out.”

The society, led by chairman Anthony Pickavance, also plans to put on screenings of short films from former pupils of the school.

Mrs Barker, publicity officer, added: “Some very well-known celebrities have graduated from the school. I remember going down 15 years ago and seeing work by the Wallace and Gromit team, Nick Park of Aardman Animations Ltd.”

Celebrity guests from the south Bucks town have been invited, Mrs Barker added.

“A few celebrities from the world of television and film live in the town so we will have to see,” she added.

The society’s next performance will be Brief Encounter, featuring a talk by an unnamed actor from the film, on November 21 and November 22.
