A LORRY driver was killed on the M40 this morning.

The crash happened between junctions six and five of the southbound carriageway of the M40 and there are severe delays.

Traffic has been held up around Lane End and Stokenchurch after two lorries jackknifed.

One is causing delays between West Wycombe and Stokenchurch after getting into difficulty in Chipps Hill, while the other has jackknifed on the B482 between Stokenchurch and Marlow.

BFP photographer Sally Swift has been caught up in the traffic chaos.

She said villagers in Lane End had taken measures into their own hands and are stopping drivers going down Lane End Road to try and prevent others getting stuck on an icy bend.

The M40 crash, which involved two lorries, happened at about 3.20am this morning.

The driver of one of the vehicles, a man, was declared dead at the scene.

As a result of the crash one of the lorries shed its load of lard across all six lanes of both the north and south carriageway.

The southbound carriageway is currently closed at junction six at Lewknor and the northbound carriageway is currently closed at junction four at Handy Cross.

The closures have led to tailbacks on the motorway in both directions and motorists are being advised to avoid the area, and to only make their journey if totally necessary.

Traffic conditions are expected to return to normal at around 10am, according to the Highways Agency.

A Buckinghamshire County Council statement said: "The M40 is closed in both directions between junction 5 and 6 severely affecting commuters particularly in the High Wycombe area.

"There has been a fatal collision between two lorries and there is lard on the road which is very slippery and also facing freezing conditions.

"A diversion had been set up on the A40 but a lorry has jacknifed there causing further problems. The Highways Agency are dealing with the M40 but are estimating it could take five hours to clear."

The county council has also had to close three other roads around the county due to the winter weather chaos.

Trees have been brought down on Cadsdean Road and Long Down Hill in Cadstone and on Peters Lane in Whiteleaf. The roads are expected to be closed all day.

Police should actively target lorry drivers, pulling them over and checking their logs and state of the truck. So many times they have been driving too long (although not suggesting this is the case with todays accident), they are often overweight (the lorries I mean) and in poor condition.

The M40 claims another life.

Had the gritters been out to clear the snow and make the roads safe?

The gritters were on the M40 last night, I saw one heading southbound around 7pm.
Terrible shame.

Once again Bucks CC who are responsible for the local roads have failed to do any gritting in Lane End. Probably due to the tragic M40 accident, an ambitious lorry driver has decided to circumvent the traffic delays on the M40 and use the B492 to get through to Wycombe/Marlow.This has resulted in an accident near Booker and the B492 had to be closed, leaving the local villagers stranded and having to undertake traffic duties in the absence of any police. The possibility of snow had been forecasted for several days and Lane End always gets more than its fair share. When will Bucks CC wake up from its complacency and start doing what we pay for!

It took me 2 hours to get to work this morning, due to the tailbacks at Stokenchurch and then tree's down in Bledlow Ridge. The authorities knew we were in for some snow, why wasn't more action taken? Even at 10am today some of the roads were still really icy..

I didn't see a single gritter last night...

What we need are more speed cameras, that will stop all these incidents. Come on BFP and the Do-Gooders, start a campaign. Oh, forgot, you already have.

Having spent a number of years in the road haulage industry, I would like to comment on the story of the tragic accident on the M40 this morning.Firstly,uk operators are (by way of legislation) the most professional & scrutinised operators in Europe & are working as hard as possible to satisfy customers despite servere financial pressure. Unfortunatly our visitors from abroad driving non-UK registerd trucks are not so professional & appear to flout the law whenever possible simply because they know they can get away with it. I hasten to add I dont' know the country of origin of the vehicles involved in last nights incident.
With ref to last night's weather, having spent a long day working in Birmingham I was traveling M40 south back to Chesham at around midnight. The bad weather only really started just south of Oxford with the snow settling quite thick on at least 1-2 lanes. Despite over head signs stating gritting in progress I did not actully see a gritter until exiting at Beaconsfield. By this time the roads were already getting quite slippery as they were starting to ice up. As with other comments, I would like to suggest that the complete lack of action to snow-plough or grit the road could have been a contributing factor to this tragic incident.

I do agree we need more gritters on the roads, perhaps this could have been prevented. But we will never know!

in one of the pictures from today's horrific accident on the M40 - I believe you can see a gritter!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!! so that's probably the cause of the accident, the driver was so shocked to see a gritter lorry in south bucks, he crashed.
