PROPOSALS to build new houses and a church in Amersham have been made just months after a similar scheme was rejected.

Developers want to build on the former school field in Raans Road.

GKA Ltd this week submitted a bid to build 83 dwellings, a new church building and 'public open space'.

New access roads and parking areas would also be built to improve access to the site.

However, a near-identical plan put forward by Cala Homes was turned down by Chiltern District Council in May this year.

Among the reasons given for refusal on that occasion were an increase in traffic problems in the area and the proposed design of the new 375-seat church auditorium - which has been reduced from an initial 500 seats.

There would also be an increase in the number of available car parking spaces - up from 65 to 77.

A 'multi-use games area' included in the original application will not now be built.

At the planning meeting where the original plans were turned down, Cllr Jane Bramwell said she believed the plans would “impact very badly on other people living in Amersham”.

Much of the project's support has come from members of the King's Church, which has been looking for a new home for more than 20 years.

Comments on the new submission will be made to the district council by Amersham Town Council.
