WITH the show season upon him, it is a busy time for rose grower Ken Wilks of Dearfield Close.
Earlier this month he picked up five first prizes for his roses at the Naphill Show but his main aim is the South of England National championships held in conjunction with the Littlewick Green show over the August Bank Holiday. Prior to that event he will also be exhibiting at the Ibstone, Lane End and Wycombe shows.
Mr Wilks grows his show flowers behind a six-foot high fence on his Marlow allotment to save his prized roses from muntjac deer. He has been exhibiting for many years and apart from his roses he also exhibits vegetables, gladioli and dahlias.
Of his roses, his favourites are Red Devil and the two-coloured Die Welt among the hybrid teas and Red Splendour of the floribunda roses.
MARLOW'S vacancy for a team vicar is to be re-advertised in the autumn as the judging panel decided they couldn't fill the position following the interviews conducted last week.
A FLAG day in the town centre raised £324.82 for Leukaemia Care.
DRAGON boats will be on the Thames again this Sunday. Teams of 11 made up of ten paddlers and one drummer will be raising money for the Anthony Nolan Trust, which manages one of the world's registers of bone marrow and blood stem donors.
CRICKET coaching is underway at Marlow Cricket Club with a summer holiday school. Until August 21 boys aged between ten and 13 can give cricket a try and there is also a group for boys under ten and girls up to the age of 12. Justin on 01628 481846 has more information about the schooling.
A HEFTY £6,925.30 was raised at St Peter's Fete when it was held in Higginson Park. Some £2000 of that total was raised from the raffle.
BOOKS, bric-a-brac and tombola prizes are needed for the Community Association's Carnival, which will be held on September 20. They can be left at Liston Hall reception.
LISTON hall reception had to cope with some concerned parents last week after I curtailed the Parent Toddlers summer term by a week. Sorry about that and I hope it was not too much of an inconvenience. However the group returns for the autumn term on Thursday, September 4.

HAYDEN Tunstall's name came out of the hat first to win the £250 cycle Saddle Safari put up to celebrate National Bike Week and their own 10th anniversary. More than 50 entries were received in the competition.

CAT lovers might like to know that once again the High Wycombe and South Bucks branch of Cats Protection are holding their popular Images of the Cat photographic contest.
There are four categories, perfect portrait, cats and people, cats in action and a class for junior photographers under twelve who can enter photos in any of the three classes. Entry forms can be found at the Institute Road library and entries close on August 31. The public will choose the winners when the annual open day at the Shelter in Loudwater is held on September 7.
LAST Sunday, Bill Williams home, Whitewalls in Quarry Wood Road, was the headquarters for the Bisham Gardens Open Day. This Sunday the distinctive Thames-side house with its spectacular views of the Marlow weir will be open to the public again. This time the National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust will be the beneficiary. Admission is £1.50 for adults and the gardens will be open from 2pm to 5pm.
THE Marlow Society is hoping to arrange the opening of the Marlow Masonic Centre in St Peter's Street to mark this year's Heritage Day to be held on Sunday, September 14. Meanwhile the Society holds its annual garden party at The Mill at Medmenham on Sunday week.

SIR William Borlase School is the venue for Week Two of the Energise 2003 sports coaching programme for eight to 13 year olds. Multi sports, including hockey, cricket, basketball, athletics, netball, football, rugby and tennis, are taught in two-hour sessions, enabling the youngsters to improve existing skills or learn new sports.
