Credit card cloning gang members face jail

FIVE members of a gang which cloned credit cards to steal £141,000 of fuel from petrol stations across the country are facing jail today.

The plot operated in Wycombe, east London, Watford and Wheatley in Oxfordshire.

The gang skimmed 253 cards which customers had used to pay for mobile phones, before draining unmanned pumps for free.

Alexandra Felix, prosecuting, told Southwark Crown Court their criminal associates also operated in Manchester and Wigan.

The ring was smashed after the thieves were seen filling large metal drums at two different venues.

Farid Patel, 23, supplied the skimmer to relative Shoeb Patel, 24, who copied card details while working in Carphone Warehouse in Canary Wharf.

Farid distributed the cloned cards to his cohorts and joined Asquar Axam, 23, Javed Bhikha, 27, and Ashif Umarjee, 24, to raid the pumps.

Ms Felix said: “These defendants conspired together and with persons unknown to steal fuel using stolen credit card details.

“Found in their possession were articles used in the fraud, namely a device carrying the stolen card information as well as equipment that enabled the details of cards to be skimmed.

“In relation to Shoeb Patel, he compromised card details while in a position of trust as an employee of Carphone Warehouse.”

In October 2007 Asda's corporate security manager noted American Express cards were being used for 'block purchases' of petrol at the two terminals.

In just three days £3,065 of fuel was pumped into the same vehicle at branches of the supermarket in East Ferry Road and Leyton Mills.

The next month the gang struck at a pump in High Wycombe, but were spotted by police.

Asquar was a passenger in a van driven by Bhikha found to contain several drums they claimed were empty.

When police found the drums were too heavy to move one of the gang claimed he worked in a garage and the petrol was 'dirty diesel'.

Two days' later a police community support officer spotted Farid crouching down and tampering with a silver Mercedes van in London Road, Wheatley, while wearing latex gloves.

Farid, who was with Umarjee, claimed the vehicle was losing water but a search revealed the van was crammed with fuel drums.

Farid Patel and Umarjee of East Ham, Bhikha, of Forest Gate and Azam, of Oxford, each admitted conspiracy to steal fuel between July 31 and November 27, 2007.

Shoeb Patel, of Manor Park, pleaded guilty to a like charge on the basis that he did not know fuel was being stolen, and a further charge of fraud by abuse of position.

Umarjee, Farid and Azam also admitted possessing articles for use in fraud.

The five will be sentenced on February 9.

WIll it be a sentence that will actually deter them in future? I doubt it! They will be out in no time and at it again! Deport them!

With names like that the accused should be kicked out of this country and sent back to where they came from, don't waste time and money taking them to court.

TRUE BLUE IF YOU CANNOT POST BLOGGS WITHOUT BEING OFFENSIVE DONT BOTHER.
THAT SAID THESE MEN WERE ENGAGED NOT ONLY IN A WELL ORGANISED SCAM BUT A DANGEROUS ONE.
IT WAS WELL PLANNED AND INTENDED TO DEFRAUD THE PETROL RETAILERS.
I SENTENCE THEM TO 10 YEARS EACH AND IF FOUND TO BE ILLEGALLY IN THE UK TO BE DEPORTED UPON RELEASE.
THE JUDGE.

The simple fact is the sentences given out by the courts are so namby-pamby they are no longer a deterrent.

If two people stole £140k and were given ten years we all know they will be out in about 5 years. That means the crime (and 5 years incarceration) gave them a gain of £14k per year in prison per person. That’s better than some part-time jobs! Thanks to the wishy-washy sentences given out by the courts in some situations crime pays.

Not necessarily referring to this case in particular, if someone is here illegally and commits a crime and are deported straight after leaving prison the tax payer has been paying for each person to say in prison and at the end they were simply sent away. What a waste of tax payer’s money!

If people who are here illegally are caught committing crime and found guilty why bother sending them to prison and burdening the tax payer? Just deport them straight away and use the money saved to fight crime and clean up society.

It’s time the legal system was overhauled. Get rid of the fuddy-duddy judges and bring some fresh blood into the criminal justice system.

Judge - Please stop "shouting" by typing everything in caps. You've been told loads of times by loads of people. It's nasty to read and considered rude.

IVOR IS IN CONTEMPT AND MIS-INFORMED THE JUDGE HAS SPOKEN
** Please note the following comment is in reply to those of the user posting as “the judge” and his hypothetical “sentence” given by him in his original comment (above) and not aimed at the people mentioned in the news article.

No, Ivor has exposed the ridiculous way the criminal justice system works. If the judge had his way he would waste millions in tax payer’s money on a trial and incarceration in a prison cell only to possibly send the offenders out of the country!

If the people shouldn’t be in the country in the first place why bother putting them on trial? Just deport them! This way we could even save the money on a trial and there would be no need to employ the old duffer judges to give their namby-pamby sentences!

My final word: The judge spoke and revealed what a bungle the criminal justice system is. THE JUDGE IS SACKED!

Makes no difference - if they were born in Britain, they are British.
There is no such thing as an English person anyway- we are a bastardised nation made up of celts, anglo saxons, and a lot of other races as well.
Going on that argument, had they had been called Blodwyn Llwewelyn and Thomas Evans, would there have been a demand to send them back to Wales?
Don't get me wrong -they are criminals but I abhor and hate the old "send them back to where they came from" argument.
If they were born in East Ham, then that is where they came from - QED.
