A COUNCIL and local driving instructors are encouraging teenagers to take a driving course before they begin their lessons on the road.

The Road Safety Team at Buckinghamshire County Council has teamed up with the Association of Wycombe and District Driving Instructors to promote the pre-driver course.

The two day course, costing £95, is aimed at 16-18-year-olds, and will be held on February 17 and 18 at Wycombe High School, at a cost of £95.

During the two days the youngsters will be shown how to apply for a provisional licence and prepare for both the Theory and Practical Driving Tests, and there will be a presentation by The Driving Standards Agency and Buckinghamshire Fire Service.

The teenagers will have the opportunity to drive a car with the help of a driving instructor Valerie Letheren, portfolio holder for transportation, said: “This course is an excellent introduction for pre-drivers. We hope that it will help young drivers understand the key risk areas and to stay safe and drive responsibly.”

Under-25’s are involved in almost a quarter of all crashes causing death or injury, but only make up nine per cent of the total number of licence holders.

During 2007 there were 72 collisions involving young drivers where someone was killed or seriously injured.

If the youngsters of today are so backward they need to be shown how to apply for a provisional licence then it’s no wonder there are so many accidents on the road!

Surely things like applying for a driving licence should be taught in schools as part of the life skills element of the curriculum?

I'm confused is Valerie Letheren a driving instructor as well as the portfolio holder for transportation?

To be honest they are probably better off passing their driving test and then doing an advanced driving course.

Introducing a "pre-driving" class is an excellent idea and this has been suggested to the DSA and the DfT during their consultation paper.

Other countries has implemented it as compulsory and it is also in direct line with the latest research within driver education (GDE-Matrix).

I do believe the driving education during these
"pre-driving classes are coached under safe environment and not on open road where the "private coach/supervisors often starts. There are many crashes because of this.

Why would anyone need an advanced driving course if not to drive fast?
