Valentine's messages for councillors in campaign to save pool

CAMPAIGNERS are urging people to send Valentine's cards to Wycombe councillors, as a protest at plans to close an open-air swimming pool.

Organisers are hoping hundreds of people will join them in sending a card to council leader Councillor Lesley Clarke, in a bid to save the treasured Holywell Mead pool in The Rye.

Steve Guy, the Lib Dem challenger for the Wycombe parliamentary seat, said the initiative was intended to keep the pressure on the council, who need to save £2m in next year's budget.

He said: “It's the sort of thing that will stick in people's minds. The idea is to show just how strong public feeling is towards the pool, and it ties in nicely with Valentines Day.

“We are also taking a pitch in the market in High Wycombe on Saturday, and will have our petition out there for people to sign.”

A message sent out to members of the Save Holywell Mead Swimming Pool group on social networking site Facebook urged people to send a card to Cllr Clarke or another local councillor saying “We love our pool and hope you do too!”.

More than 270 people have also backed a South Bucks Star campaign to save the pool, which was opened more than 50 years ago.

If that's what Steve Guy ideas are for campaigning, then he isn't going to get very far in his challenge for the parliamentary seat! I understand how people feel about the pool-but at the end of the day there is a pool that can be used all year round at Handy Cross. I don't want my council tax to go up anymore that it has to cover a pool that can only be used a few months a year.

Eagle eye - no-one wants to put up your council tax. WDC have failed to explore why the pool is losing money and what could be done to make it more successful. Other towns have lidos that are open year round and attract sponsorship. Closing it is just a knee jerk reaction to the current hole in WDC finances.

Mr. Guy- Whose going to pay for the up keep then if it isn't the rate payers? It's quite simple really, why the pool is losing money, not enough people using it and only open for 13 weeks. If you had a company that wasn't doing very well, what would happen? it would get closed down! look at some of the businesses in the area. You suggest sponsorship,
do you know how hard it is to get anything sponsored in this town? Ask any local charity or school.

Once pools gone its gone forever .
Seems all Cllr Clarke and Tory councillors have a simple agenda
-sell off everything!!!
-get rid of services !!!
-Strip the town of all that is precious to us!!!

The pool is a valuable community facility that is used by thousands each year. 10,000 average swims over the last 5 years!!!
I want our children to have local facilities that will encourage them to leave their computer screens, get some exercise and have some fun. I am getting sick of the mean and miserable gits who run our local services.

They can easily find money when it suits them! Are we still going to get a nice glossy magazine delivered to every door?
With all these cuts in services surely that will mean less work for Councillors. Will the Conservatives cut their allowances accordingly?

Why do the Conservatives insist on having both District and County Councils when one unitary authority would bring massive cost savings?

If the council wanted to save money it would publish its planned budget now and allow residents to comment. What are they hiding?

Why is there NO consultation over the future of the pool? What are they afraid of?

What have they got planned bearing in mind they are also closing the environment centre?

Is the building to be sold off to a private fitness club?

We want answers.

Save our Pool.
