Party wants alternate cash for Holywell Mead, High Wycombe

Lib Dems: let someone else run axed pool Lib Dems: let someone else run axed pool

AN opposition councillor is trying to find alternate funding to keep open axed Holywell Mead swimming pool in High Wycombe.

Liberal Democrat Julia Wassell said she wanted to put together a consortium to come up with a business plan that would keep the facility, by the Rye.

She said her early thoughts were that it could open three days a week instead of the usual seven and more use could be made of the venue for private parties.

Conservative-run Wycombe District Council last week voted to close the pool as bosses said it was under-used and cost too much.

Yet a Tory leader said while the council would be open to discussions about outside funding this would need to see the pool used more instead of less.

Cllr Wassell, whose party opposed the closure, said: “I have been contacted by a number of local residents who want the pool to continue.

“There is a lot of anger amongst them who clearly feel let down by the council.”

She said: “It is not going to be easy and the business model will have to change but I will leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of maintaining the pool on the Rye.

“I hope local businesses and the Bucks Free Press will join this new phase of our campaign.”

The pool could become a “premier party venue” she said and could include a stall for Fairtrade food and drink products, which give a “fair deal” to third world producers.

The move echoes a campaign Cllr Wassell fought to take control of Micklefield Library from Buckinghamshire County Council, which pulled its funding.

A charity was set up and took over the running of the High Wycombe library, a move replicated in others parts of the county.

A similar arrangement could be made to run the pool, said Cllr Wassell, a district council member for Bowerdean.

Tory councillor Tony Green, responsible for leisure, said any plan would need to increase usage of the pool and include a major re-vamp of the site.

The pool would have to open all year round, he said. Cllr Wassell said a membership-run scheme could be set up for winter swimmers.

Cllr Green said: “We have always said we are open to any feasible plan that comes forward and we will be looking, now the decision has been made, for alternative uses for the pool.”

Cllr Green added: “If an open air swimming pool is viable in some way then that is fine. If it isn’t we will be looking for alternative uses for the site.”

The council would keep it for community and leisure use, he said, whatever the outcome. “We are not going to demolish it for flats,” he said.

Cllr Green said: “I don’t think we are looking to make a profit, I think we are looking to remove the cost.”

The closure plan was opposed by almost 400 South Bucks Star readers and more than 2,000 people who signed a Lib Dem petition.

Party Wycombe parliamentary spokesman Steve Guy said “It is early days with a long way to go but Julia was once told Micklefield library couldn't be saved and look at the success of that campaign “I am hopeful her experience will bring dividends to this new phase of our campaign.”

The council said the pool would cost £66,000 to run a year and need £60,000 worth of upgrading works over five years.

The closure was among a number of cuts to save £1.68m.

Tony Green needs to wake up and smell the coffee. It is going to cost thousands to decommission the pool. Much better idea to hand it over to the community so they can run it. Good luck Julia!

As long as not even 1p from my taxes goes towards the upkeep then go for it! If someone thinks its a viable option, when it's failed in the past then it's up to them I guess.

I don't think there will be many businesses who will be interested in a business which under its current state, would only be trading for 3 months of the year.

I reckon they already know what the future is of the site. I am sure that they knew it before they announced the closure. Lets watch this space..

Cllr Green --
Hand over buiding to community -- but dont then attempt to screw money through rates of other charges !!

So Yog and towncryer - will you be able to give the time, committment and possible financial input to run the pool..

Time & commitment ok, will do my bit. Funding - well as I'm not getting value for money out of my Council Tax I can cut what I pay to WDC and give it to the community pool instead!

How will you know how much money to cut out of your council tax.

"Tory councillor Tony Green, responsible for leisure, said any plan would need to increase usage of the pool and include a major re-vamp of the site."

What! He wants a community run pool to do it BETTER than the Council did? As someone said earlier, perhaps the Council already had other plans for the site!

What I do know is that Julia Wassell managed to save Micklefield Library when others said it couldn't be done - so don't write her off!

Perhaps Tony Green is scared stiff that someone else might make a success of the pool - and make him look a fool for saying it couldn't be saved. I desperately want the pool to be saved, for my children and grandchildren to enjoy. I'd also like to think that a future WDC with better leaders might restore public funding.

I am ambivelant about the pool. I really do not care if it stays or goes. I do not use it neither am I likely to. However I do not object if some of my council tax is used to keep it open as I recognise that it is important to some.
Its a pity that others can't be as open minded as to how their tax is used. :)

It seems clear that the Tory Council want to sell off this land and build pent house flats on the site. I can not understand why the so called party of business would oppose the Liberal plan to use private enterprise to keep a much loved public pool open. But then the Tory answer to opportunity to all is to close libraries. This is what they want to do in Wycombe imagine what they will do to the country if they get in again. Fight Tory cuts.

The big issue is Torys wont spend on pool
Will they pass pool to community at nil cost and nil yearly rates -- since it needs renovation seems only fair
Will they support with Grants
Will they match fund whatever community raises

ive got an idea..but who do i take it to...SERIOUSLY...im a professional groundsman, ive worked on some of the most prestigeous grounds in the country, from the old Wembley, premiership football clubs, Wentworth, Sunningdale Golf courses Guards Polo..anyway...i know of a system caled X Dome...its an inflateable dome that covers an entire football pitch so it can be used in all weathers for training, my beloved Chelsea FC has one, and ive seen them at other grounds, ...cant this be looked into to cover the pool and make use of it for longer periods of the year, thus making it a bit more of a viable option..????????????

If the pool can be run at a profit by a third party why can’t the Council do it?

Sportsturf, you should get in touch with Julia Wassell, I saw her in Wycombe today. She was talking about a dome, but doesn't have any knowledge of this. She can be contacted at the District Council.

All this talk of Holywell Mead pool being handed to the community, the community already own it along with the council purse and all the other council assets. I would like to remind Cllr Tony Green and the Tory party they are only appointed keepers, who should listen to the 2000 plus residents who signed the pool petition and should also consider alternate budget put forward by Lib Dems. If not the people of Wycombe should look to change the keepers at next elections.

But Marsh Crudesader, they gave £5m worth of land and housing away in St Hughes Avenue, they gave 50k to Totterige Social Club, the list is endless of money and assets they give away. Why worry about the Pool in particular?

Tories in Wycombe are stuck in the 80's. Cameron has moved on it is about time he dragged Wycombe Tories up as well.

Still no comment from our MP on this issue. Get your head out of the sand Goodman!

Heres a thought! The council (WDC) have just awarded a new contract to a new company to run its leisure centres. Now, correct me if I am wrong but Hollywell Mead swimming pool may not be a leisure centre in the true sense of the word but it is certainly a leisure facility and as such, it should have been packaged with the other leisure centres, particularly as the council already knew the cost implications of continuing to operate the pool and were already discussing its possible closure, and all tenders should have included the running of the pool in their submissions. Is it to late for the council to go back to the new contract holder and offer them the running of this facility at no extra cost to the council?

As I said before - perhaps he doesn't see it as an issue. Have you complained at his surgery, have you written to him..

Here is something that I did not see in the article or the comments: What do the "books" say. The council says it costs £66,000 to run a year. How much does the pool take in from entrance and use fees? Is the £66,000 after deducting the fees? Maybe an increase in the entrance fees would help. I find it unlikely that the pool does not generate enough income to offset the costs of running the pool.
The next suggestion would be to privatize it or sell it and let the new owners run it as a business. If there are no takers and there is truly a £66,000 deficit, then maybe it should be closed. But then what? just leave it there unused. I don't think so. How much do you think it will cost the council to have it completely removed? My guess is a whole lot more than the projected deficit.

Yes because as many others suspect the deal was done well before they decided to close the pool. That is why the Conservative Councillors who wanted to vote for the Lib Dem budget amendment which would have reduced the council tax and saved the pool were not allowed to do so.

And still our MP does nothing. A do nothing MP from a DO nothing Party!
