A RARE coin that was made in St Albans 2,000 years ago is expected to fetch up to £1,300 when it goes up for auction in London.

The Iron Age coin was struck in Verulamium between 10BC and 25 BC and horse-riding Celtic warriors are depicted. The coin bares the name Tasciovanus, the first known leader of the Catuvellauni tribe of Hertfordshire.

Keeper of archaeology at Verulamium Museum David Thorold said: "This is certainly an interesting piece as it would have been among the earliest coins to have been minted in Britain and Verulamium was one of the first towns to have minted coins."

The coin goes up for auction at Spink auction house in London on Wednesday.
