Travellers plead to be given a chance

Travellers plead to be given a chance Travellers plead to be given a chance

A FAMILY of travellers who bought land in Princess Risborough has pleaded with the community to give them a chance, saying they “just want a place to call home”.

The group of nine families is desperate for their children to have an education and provide better care for one of their number, a 24-year-old blind woman who was born with no eyes.

Margaret Murphy is not able to get a guide dog without a permanent residence, they say.

The travellers began construction on the site, in Upper Icknield Way, just off Shootacre Lane in Princess Risborough, on Easter Friday.

They have built a wooden fence around the perimeter of the land.

Wycombe District Council has issued a stop notice which prevents them from bringing in anymore stonework to the site.

Patrick Hanrahan, 58, spokesman for the families, said: “This is really important, it’s a life or death situation.

“We have been on the road all our life and we just want a place to call home.

“I have 11 kids, we have been moved from pillar to post and my elderly mother needs doctors’ care.

“My children have no education we want to get them into schools.”

Mr Hanrahan said that it had been a long term goal to settle in one area and every resource had gone into making it happen.

“Every penny I have has gone into this place, we just about scraped enough money together between us,” he said.

Wycombe District Council is understood to be taking out a court injunction to stop the work going ahead.

Mr Hanrahan said: “We thought that was going to happen but we will just have to fight it.

“We are all British subjects and we have as much right to be here as anyone else.”

Some concerned residents have expressed fears about their new neighbours but Mr Hanrahan said, although he understands their view, they have nothing to worry about.

“We will be no nuisance to neighbours, we won’t bother them or even ask them for the time of day,” he said.

“I know it’s a bit of a surprise for them and they must think the foreign troops have landed but they need not be apprehensive in any way at all.”

The families plan to build individual plots with sanitary facilities and they say the area will be kept clean.

Gary Hall, district councillor for Princess Risborough and former town mayor, said he and residents had deep concerns.

He said: “It was a total shock to the whole community.

“Everyone is worried, especially those who live near by.

“I don’t welcome it whatsoever, it’s on greenbelt land. It doesn’t look pretty, it’s on nice open fields. They have destroyed the local lanes by carrying through all their rubbish and mud.

“I’m just very uncomfortable with it and I know my colleagues are as well.

“We’re unanimous. It’s not welcome or appropriate and has got to be clamped down on.

“The district council is doing all it can at the moment.”

He said he was concerned about “antisocial behaviour and tumbling property prices” due to media stories about travellers’ camps in Essex.

Construction could be finished in a month if the travellers are allowed to continue, they said.

Have to give credit where credit is due,I wholeheartedly commend those Councillors who are opposing this.

I trust the "travellers" will be reimbursing the legal fees.

Glad the council are doing the right thing. These people should get on the housing list and into council housing if they need a home. They have no right to buy land and build on it willy nilly.

Does anyone know what happened to the case against the Holmer Green 'Showmen'? They bought a field a few years back 'to keep their vehicles on out of season'. Uh huh. Well they are still there, lots of vehicles (isn't it 'in' season now?), and they have tarmaced/fenced/buil
t houses on the site (can be seen from the A404). This is just not fair.

How right you are its to easy to pick on decent people who pay into the system.Like the shop in Downley that may have to tear down a lean to.

PLanning is planning, and if I have to deal with it, everyone has to. No ifs or exceptions.

...enforcement needs to be stronger in my opinion, and this certainly should not be allowed.

"Been on the road all our life" & "now want schools and doctors" !

They have probably never paid any taxes and now they want to use our Schools and Doctors for free!

As for building on Green belt, we should not allow this and I am sure the council will continue to stop it as they have reserved the right to build on green-belt whenever they want to.

This is what happens when unscrupulous deals are 'done' underhand,in cash!

Let it be a lesson to all of those out there who believe that they are making a quick buck!

Where is the evidence of social responsibility in all of this.

It appears that those who are law abiding, tax/rate paying, and hard working are brushed aside by those who are being protected by a system that frankly 'stinks'.

I suspect that all of the local residents affected by this situation will have used their legal votes conscientiously over the years to ensure that they live in a society that is fair and where laws exist to protect everyone.

My first question is why was this not stopped before it even happened?

It seems that Wycombe District Council were informed of the impending arrival of these travellers but nothing was set in train to prevent this apalling outcome.

It is also a noted fact that travellers move in over a bank holiday weekend because this causes a time delay for the authorities getting involved.

My second question therefore, is why, if this is the case, and there was a known threat of them moving in, was nothing done to prevent it from happening?

It is a very sorry state of affairs when, one person's lack of forethought, a local councils tardiness in acting, and a set of laws which will favour one minority group over the majority, will result in an uncomfortable future for many.

This weekend, like many weekends, I ordered a curry from my local takeaway/pub. On the phone whilst ordering, it sounded like there was a riot going on in the background. On going through the door to pick up my take-away it sounded like the riot was still ongoing. To my surprise it was just one family behind the door.

The volume was incredible, the shreaking ear piercing, the air blue with swearing. Whilst waiting for my order, the owner asked the group to keep it down as the din was disturbing the other customers and room residents upstairs. The response? Raise the volume up a notch and keep going.

The rest of the customers, in true British fashion, sat there in grim faced silence.

As I left I pondered the fact that it's only every couple of years you come across people so obnoxious and abhorrent.

Then to my surprise the next day I see this story. The very same family are now engaging in a PR campaign - on giving them a chance!

Sorry, you had your chance, and you blew it within 24 hours of arriving.

Risborough's traders don't need people destroying their livelihoods at this time.

You have that round the wrong way I fear...

This should read "They will just bully our kids"

As for "Time To Act, Wiltshire's" comment - WHAT THE DUCK HAS IT GOT TO DO WITH YOU!

Let's face it they won't be moved as per Holmer Green Showmen. The kids will cause havoc in our schools, the mums/grans will steal from the local shops and the dads/grandads will fight in the pubs. Watch your fuel, vans, caravans, anything that is not nailed down it will all get nicked. But as they say give them a chance as they need to turn a nice peaceful village with lovely green belt land into a ugly looking dump!
