AMERSHAM had a spring clean today after more than 100 volunteers took to the streets armed with bin bags and pick-up sticks.
Residents, scout groups and members of King’s Church all took part in the clean-up.
Within hours, several sacks of rubbish had already been filled and two supermarket trollies had been recovered.
The clean-up was organised by Mayor Martin King as part of the build-up to the Britain in Bloom contest for the best-kept town in the country.
Cllr King said: “It’s been very successful and a worthwhile project. It’s identified a lot of problem spots we can now deal with.
“I’m very pleased with the turnout. The whole scheme has been working well.”
Volunteers were given certificates to thank them for taking part in the spring clean.
This year will be the third time Amersham has entered the Britain in Bloom competition – and the town is going for gold after picking up Silver and Silver Gilt awards in the previous two years.
A separate Amersham in Bloom contest will also take place in the summer.
Judging will take place on July 2 before the winners are announced at the town carnival ten days later.
Later in the month a judging team for Britain in Bloom will arrive.
