Traffic calming measure reversed after complaints

A CONTENTIOUS traffic calming measure is to be reversed after complaints from drivers.

Plans to change the notorious pinch at Fulmer Road in Gerrards Cross is being considered by Bucks County Council, halving the stretch of road and changing it from a single-lane stretch of road into two lanes.

The narrowing of the road was carried out seven years ago to reduce the number of accidents occurring in Fulmer Road but the measure has proved a headache for drivers.

Rodney Royston, portfolio holder for planning and transportation at Bucks County Council, said: "There have been complaints over some considerable time from users of the road and, because of public demand, it has been decided to change it. Assuming the written consultation report is favourable, the work will be carried out before the end of the financial year in March 2004."

Brendan Keane, landlord of The Black Horse public house in Windmill Road, just off Fulmer Road, is all for the plans.

He said: "Local opinion is divided on this issue. I know that people trying to get through the traffic, particularly school mums, hate it. But I also know of a gentleman who lives in Fulmer Drive who thinks it is good as it has cut down considerably on the number of accidents over the years. I can see both sides of the coin and I think the main problem is that it is too long and it takes a long time to get through and you can get stuck at one end. I think the new proposal makes a lot of sense so I am all in favour."
