Rewarding day for outstanding citizens

OUTSTANDING achievement was celebrated in Amersham on Sunday with the town's Citizen of the Year awards.

Eight prizes were given out to residents, sportspeople and businesses who have made their mark on the community in the last twelve months.

Some of the awards were handed out by Martin McElhatton, who represented Great Britain at the 1984 Paralympics and is now Chief Executive of British Wheelchair sport, based in Stoke Mandeville.

Among the winners was Lukas Kuhlmey, who took the Sportsperson of the Year award after he was chosen to represent Great Britain at fencing at the World University Games in July.

Each winner received a trophy, certificate and £50.

It was the second time the Citizen of the Year awards had been presented after they were introduced by Amersham's Mayor Martin King last year.

He said: "The purpose of these awards is to encourage participation in the community and acknowledge and affirm the people doing this at the moment - to say thank you and to pay tribute to their outstanding achievement and service right across the community."

The full list of winners is as follows:

Citizen of the Year: Duncan Dyason

Senior Citizen of the Year: Dennis Wright

Junior Citizen of the Year: Steve Poulson

Sportsperson of the Year: Lukas Kuhlmey

Senior Sportsperson of the Year: Richard Salt

Junior Sportsperson of the Year: Elleni Rogers
