"Enough's enough" call as Wycombe green spaces earmarked for housing

HIGH Wycombe is becoming a “dumping ground” for new homes it has been warned after it was revealed five major green spaces are likely to be swallowed up.

Liberal Democrat councillors spoke out after Wycombe District Council revealed the “bad news” that reserve sites are likely to be released for housing by 2026.

The Government has set targets to build new houses through council planning powers, which where homes can be built.

This will include land off Kingshill Road at Terriers Farm, which runs parallel with Amersham Road.

Gomm Valley, which runs parallel with Cock Lane, would also be used for housing.

Slate Farm off Brook Bank, Bourne End would be released along with Abbey Barn North and South in Wycombe Marsh by the former RAF Daws Hill (see link, below).

If all were developed it would mean the east side of the town would be effectively urbanised with Kings Wood the only green space to break up development, between Totteridge and Tylers Green.

The homes could be built in the next 10 years.

See the links at the bottom of this story for maps of the sites.

Wycombe District Council member Ray Farmer said: “I am concerned that High Wycombe has become the dumping ground of Bucks for new homes without any real thought to the current homes in progress or land approved for building.

“Add to this the traffic issues we face with High Wycombe roads.”

Fellow Ryemead councillor Trevor Snaith said: “Enough’s enough, it’s time to say no to the building of more homes and additional traffic congestion in the town of High Wycombe.

“Gomm Valley and Abbey Barn can’t cope with the additional homes planned and additional traffic problems.”

In a presentation to residents council planning chiefs conceded it was “bad news” that it had to “plan for release of all reserve sites by 2026”.

Councillor Jean Teesdale, responsible for planning on the Conservative-led council, said: “It would be a last resort.

“We have these pressures from Government, there is nothing we can do about it.

“We aim to resist as long as possible but we have to find our housing numbers. We have to house people.”

The town was “very restricted” when compared to Aylesbury, she said.

Cllr Teesdale said: “It will be inevitable over the years that people will need housing, it is a growing population.”

Councillor David Shakespeare, a Tylers Green and Loudwater member on WDC, said: "In 12 months we are going to have a Conservative Government that has pledged to scrap these plans."

Are the Conservatives on Wycombe District Council not convinced that they will win the next General Election and can then set their own national house building targets or is the truth that the Conservatives are quite happy to accept Labours Housing targets.

It is clear there is an agreement between Labour & Conservative politicians to fill in any available green space around Wycombe.

Oh look...Houses to be built on the allotments...(as I said months back!)

In fact lots of urban spread just so we can give houses to any Tom Dick or Hussain.

I just knew Terries Farm would be back on the agenda eventually. It's all depressing - Wycombe is already choked with traffic, and I can't see how it can cope with much more.
There are no major plans to address the traffic and access problems that will result from all this planned development.
Step by inexorable step, all the green bits that make the edges of Wycombe a moderately agreeable place to live are being eroded away.
How on earth is London Road expected to cope with all the extra traffic from the Wycombe Marsh development? Traffic is almost stationary during rush hours now.

At the risk of repeating myself, it's SO depressing - I think I'll just bang my head against the wall for a bit, and then have a lie down.

It is the same as always, Conservative politicians say one thing in their leaflets and then do the complete opposite. Vote the scoundrels out!

Where does everyone propose we put new homes? Demand still outstrips supply. Perhaps to the West of Wycombe - on more open land. There is no easy solution.

Lets just hope it is small houses and not more sodding flats.

Stop bringing politics into this - it is not relevant. Who decided Wycombe area needed to build x new homes in the first place? Not Labour perchance?

SOCIAL HOUSING in Wycombe is a DIRTY word.
The Conservatives delivered their election pamphlet last week, begging for votes, for all their efforts NOT ONCE did they mention social housing maybe people should camp out on the Rye and claim for a second home.
Where will the younger generation get their living accommodation ?
Not from the private sector at a price they can afford.

Instead of cramming more and more houses into the town area, why not look along the motorway for somewhere to put a new village?

Let's face it the existing road and allied infrastructure in the town is barely coping now.

What would it look like with hundred or thousands of new houses?

Other towns like Aylesbury manage to plan their new housing instead of what the Wycombe Tories do which is to place more and more houses in the town - because they are dominated by rural councillors.

Reality is we cannot see Wycombe in splendid isolation.

The whole country needs housing.

And we can't keep on building on 'postage stamp' lots on someone's remnant back garden.

It's inhuman & inhumane. And on occasions looks downright silly too.

I'm with the human beings on this one.

We need more homes for local people --
There is plenty land but will need to build along roads like A404 and areas like Flackwell Heath ,Bourne End and road to Saunderton

Politics play a large part; Labour might well issue the dictat, the local representatives should be saying "bog off"!!

Sadly for SD Jones. Terriers Farm has been for many yrs earmarked for housing, WHEN NEEDED. Also instead of an unwanted Sports Stadium at the Airpark. WDC should keep to the local plan, & use it for housing. When the lease comes to an end in around 2020. High Wycombe, has sadly two vast disadvantages. The WDC Development Control Committee. Which is made up mostly by NONE Town Councillors. Also unlike Marlow, P Risborough & others. We do not have a Town Council to fight off over development.

When will people see that half these new homes are for those that are very un-local!

We're full up!

Why should we build x thousand houses in the South East at all?
There are miles of open land with access to motorways and railways in the Midlands and the North. I'm getting fed up with Parliament telling everyone to live in the South east. Spend the money up North, create the jobs in construction there and let us breath down here.

You are correct , Townman.

The non-residents and anti-Wycombe brigade on the Council are hell-bent on destroying the Town of Wycombe.

This they are achieving by sheer short-sighted ignorance and yielding to planners (and their 'chums') who to demand short-term and ugly over-development.

We need people in charge who care for the town and its residents and will stand up for it against the 'fast-buck' interests.

That's why there's such a large inproportionate number of unasked for 1 and 2 bed-room flats built and in the offing.

Decent sized family homes in decent surroundings are in very short supply.

A real Town Council would never have let this situation develop.

The whole idea of building in the south when the infrastructure is so lacking!
Let's stop building so many of these yuppie flats that are certainly not aimed at the affordable housing market and build some proper "homes" in some of the brownfield sites north of Watford!
